Ins Leben gerufen von dem Zeitungsmacher Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911) und seit 1917 jährlich von der School of Journalism der Columbia University, New York, vergeben. Es gibt Preise für journalistische Arbeiten, Musik, Geschichte, Lyrik, Dramen und Romane.

Hier berücksichtigt: vor allem Romane, gelegentlich Lyrik, Sachbuch und Drama. Es können daher mehrere Preise pro Jahr auftreten – oder auch keiner... 1917, 1920, 1964, 1971, 1974 und 1977 gab es keinen Preis für einen Roman oder Stories.
