Zu Ehren des SF-Autors John W. Campbell 1973 gestiftet, als John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Seit 1979 wird er im Rahmen eines Banketts an der Universiät von Kansas in Lawrence verliehen.

1976 hat die Jury den Preis für einen 1970 erschienenen Roman vergeben, weil ihr keiner der nominierten gut genug schien. 1994 gab es keinen Preis, dafür 2002 und 2009 gleich zwei.
