Die Kriminalromane über "Duffy" hat Barnes unter seinem Pseudonym (der Nachname ist der seiner Frau Pat) geschrieben. Drei seiner Romane hatten es bis in die Shortlist des Man Booker Prize geschafft – aber erst 2011 hat er den Preis endlich bekommen. Die Juryvorsitzende, Dame Stella Rimmington, sagte, das Buch habe the markings of a classic of English Literature. It is exquisitely written, subtly plotted and reveals new depths with each readings.
